Food for Thought Afghanistan is currently working with 13 Afghan women activists who have had to flee Afghanistan to Pakistan where they are currently stuck and struggling to get out before they are found and killed. These women are activists who spoke up, organized and attempted to advocate for the rights of women in the face of Taliban oppression. They've all been in Taliban custody and are dealing with the physical and mental injuries that resulted. Many have lost close family members to the Taliban or had to leave people they love behind. We are currently working with associates inside Pakistan to get these women into safe houses while our connections here in the USA work to expedite them through our asylum process. Many of these women have been stuck in Pakistan for a year or more and remain at serious risk of violence while their conditions deteriorate.
Food for Thought Afghanistan is committed to helping Afghan people who work on behalf of their fellow Afghans. These women are those people. We cannot sit by as the worst of us continue to destroy the best of us without stepping in. These women need help so they can get to safety, heal and then carry on their very important work. Our first order or business is to raise fund to cover the expense of getting these women and their families into safe houses. We have a goal of $30,000 which we believe will cover their basic expenses while waiting for asylum in a third country.
A longtime friend in Pakistan who has experience with helping the victims of organized crime and targeted violence escape to safety is working with us to arrange this for the women. Any money raised beyond what is required for their care will go directly to the women themselves.
