Lal Bigum was a prosecutor and outspoken advocate for human rights in Afghanistan. Her work and outspokenness led to imprisonment, torture, and continued threats from Taliban officials even after her release. Her husband’s social activism also drew the regime’s ire. They escaped to Pakistan with nothing.

Today, they live in a cramped single-room dwelling, constantly watching over their shoulders. Both have chronic pain from past abuse, and they fear even going outside could result in arrest or  deportation.

They are deeply committed to rebuilding their lives and contributing to Brazil through civic engagement and community building.
