Shabnam, a journalist and poet, led the Women’s Unity and Solidarity Movement in Kabul. Her activism and public interviews led to a Taliban arrest warrant. After a close associate was detained and tortured, she fled the country with her father and brother. The rest of the family followed months later.
Now in Pakistan, the family struggles with poverty, untreated medical issues, and the looming threat of deportation. Shabnam's mother suffers from gynecological illness, and two sisters are ill from chronic stomach problems.
They hope for a future in Brazil, where Shabnam can continue writing and advocating for women's rights, and her siblings can pursue education in safety.
