Marefa was a midwifery student and co-founder of the Takhar Women’s Movement. Her activism against Taliban rule placed her in direct danger, leading to raids on her home. Her husband, a professor and civil society organizer, was similarly targeted for his work with the UN and Afghan election commission. With a newborn in their arms, they fled to Pakistan and now live in a single crowded room, hidden away from public view.
They have no income, legal protection, or support system. The child has not seen a doctor since birth due to lack of funds. The mental and emotional toll of parenthood in hiding is overwhelming.
They are eager to restart life in Brazil where their daughter can grow up in peace and dignity.
