Writer: Rebecca TrotterRebecca Trotter

On 27 January, 2025, in coordination with the Coucil of Ulemas, a conference was held under the name "Peace and Mutual Respect" in downtown Kabul. The conference was attended by 92 men, 35 women, and representatives of 25 new organizations. This conference was the largest organized show of opposition to Taliban policies in the 3 1/2 years since they returned to power.

During the conference, Afghan religious scholars spoke passionately regarding the dignity of women and their right to education under Islam.
